What Are Backlinks and Why Do They Matter?

What is a backlink? And why should I have it on my site?

I was working recently with a customer and conducted the analysis for their site. While I explained to them what the details meant, my client asked “What the hell is a backlinks?” I’ve always believed that everyone knew what a “backlinks” was, but the concept was so easy for me to understand how people could not be aware of what they were. The moment I started; I began to define what a backlink is.

In the end of our discussion, my client felt more knowledgeable, however my concern was that since I hadn’t considered this question with any thought, my response to the client’s question was a bit basic. Backlinks aren’t an incredibly complicated subject, but they should be more than an external link to your website. The goal of this article is to clarify the meaning behind a backlink and the significance of it to your website’s search engine rankings and ways to earn backlinks without going over the heels of Search Engines in the process.

The first and most important question is What are the backlinks?

Backlinks are just hyperlinks to your site from other sources. They’re also referred to as inbound links in certain circles. They could be in the form of an index directory i.e. Yahoo Directory or Dex, blogs, or even as the signature of a posting on a forum or directly linked from an affiliate. What I’m trying to convey is that backlinks can be found in various kinds. Backlinks are among the most essential aspects of SEO as the majority of search engines give more weight or credibility to websites with an abundance of high-quality backlinks. This implies that sites that have more backlinks will be thought to be more relevant than other sites in a result page for a particular query. Although they’re generally beneficial to your site as well as its search engine visibility, some backlinks are more valuable than other ones.

When search engines are making a decision about a site’s ranking for a certain keyword, they take into consideration the following factors: the number of high-quality links (or inbound links you would prefer) to that website. It is not necessary to be obsessed with getting as many backlinks as possible, rather we should put our efforts on creating high-quality inbound links for our websites since it’s what the content of that link counts not the quantity, though it can assist.

Search engines look at the content on the site in determining the credibility of the hyperlink. They look for links inbound from websites with similar content. That means that when your website sells pet products, a link from a pharmacy located in Canada isn’t the kind of backlink that you would like. You should look for sites that share a similar field to yours. I advise my clients that I concentrate on companies that are identical, but not directly competing in terms of the services or products that they offer, their location, price, etc. Although it can be difficult initially to find websites that are in the same group, but not directly competing it’s well worth of the time and effort.

Concentrate on finding high-quality websites that you would like to partner with or links to you, and give the site a reward for joining this partnership. I’m not suggesting an exchange of links, but there are other strategies that can cause other sites to link to your site and you just must find out about them. A key point to remember one thing to keep in mind is Search Engines have become very specific in recent times to the kind of inbound links websites are using.

In the past, it was that in order to be the first on Google for a particular keyword, you would find one site that contained a page of links, referred to by the name of a link farm. You which was paid to put up several thousand links on your behalf and in a short period of period of time, you were ranking extremely effectively for the particular keyword.

But the times have changed. Search engines expect all websites to play fair and fairly and therefore have implemented strict standards for SEO, backlinks, and websites. methods. It is now extremely challenging to influence the search engine using external backlinks from other websites. The reason is that the search engine’s requirements for high-quality inbound links has become much more challenging. Factors like how long the website has been up and running in relation to the rate that your website is creating backlinks i.e. did you get two yesterday and today and 1000 today, etc. all factor in. These strict criteria, although surely a pain to us all, it is one of the main reasons backlinks play a major role in the algorithm of search engines.

Another Reason

To have quality backlinks is to attract visitors. In my case, an animal supply business with a link on a site that sells prescriptions from Canada won’t bring that website a lot of traffic. It might be noticed through a Google search, but the link won’t help. The purpose for search engine Optimization is to make your site more optimized for search engines, but also improve its visibility for users who are looking for it. Technically, you could get be able to get 10,000+ backlinks coming from low-quality sources however you will not rank well. The better option is to have 50 high quality backlinks from sites that are directly connected to your website’s function. This will result in a greater impact than the scenario has described previously.

This takes me to the beginning of a tangent, which is the topic that of reciprocal linkage. I briefly touched on this for a moment earlier in the article, but I feel I’m required to expand about it further. Reciprocal links are all over the place and, while it’s an effective method to get your site crawled, it’s not a great option for SEO. Google has recently added reciprocal links to its search engine filter. Many webmasters set up link exchanges prior to this to increase their site’s ranking due to having the highest number of inbound hyperlinks. Link exchanges are when one website connects to another site on the condition that the other site will then link back to it.

A lot of the links Google eliminated were of no use; However, outbound links were still considered, which resulted in a reduction of the relevancy score of a lot of websites. This caused numerous websites to be almost impossible to locate on Google.

Be cautious when using reciprocal hyperlinks. Because many of them originate from websites offering an exchange service, it is essential to be cautious and never utilize such services while you are doing this type of exchange. Google has been working on a system that will not just the reputation of a site but also how reliable a website is that your website has a link to. It means that if you link to a site that employs unsavory methods to boost its ranking on search engines, you’ll be guilty of association and will be penalized by Google. It could lead to being removed from Google for a certain period of time.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is called a “link-wheel”. Sometimes, a webmaster may have several websites. They may also be located on the same server, which means they share the identical IP. A popular trick that is used to trick the search engine into believing that this does not constitute reciprocal linking is to make each site link to each other in a circle. For instance, if there were four websites: Website A B, C and D, the link wheel could look as follows.

Website A will link with B A, B links to C and C will link with D while D will link back to the A. This creates circular linking systems and generating a hyperlink for every website. But this method can fail if a portion or all sites are located on the same or within the same IP range. Search Engines are getting smarter in recognizing these tactics. The most effective advice I can offer anyone who has backlinks is to create these through good content and websites with the same objective or goal to your website’s.

You can assist yourself while you wait by submitting your website to digg along with other popular social bookmarking websites. The idea is to eventually build enough of a following that you don’t need to resort to these methods. Examples of blogging and joining web-based forums can be very beneficial in this respect, but that is an area for another article. Focus on high-quality content, and backlinks will be able to appear. Utilize social bookmarking websites to spread the word at first, and your links will begin creating themselves within a matter of minutes.

Why Are Backlinks Important to Your Website?

The higher quality of backlinks a site has can help determine their rank in search engines for the keywords they are. One of the aspects that Google and other search engine, Google specifically, employ to determine the importance of a website for specific keywords is the number of high-quality backlinks that a website’s site is able to have. Thus, backlinks have to be of high-quality in order help the site in the search engine ranking. There’s another advantage to having high-quality backlinks for your site. If your backlinks are on websites with content that is pertinent to your website, it’s higher likelihood that when users visit those links to browse your website, they’ll be interested in the content and the services you provide.
